One bit of trivia that has been making the rounds of e-mail is that lipstick purportedly contains fish scales. This may be one bit of trivia that does have factual basics. “Pearl Essence”, the silvery stuff found in fish scales is the ingredients that used in lipstick because it lends a shimmer glow to the lips. It also used in nail polishes and ceramic glazes for precisely the same reason. Pearl Essence comes mainly from hearing, and is one of the many by products of large scale commercial, shallow waters of the North Atlantic. Synthetic version of pearl essence have already been developed, but it is not yet known to what synthetic substitutes for fish scales are mica or silica particle and bismuth oxychloride, a synthetic pearl that imports frost or shine. Manufactures have also added such ingredients as moisturizers, Vitamin E, aloe Vera, collagen, amino acids and sunscreen to lipstick in order to keep the mouth soft, wet, and sheltered from the elements.
