The Philadelphia Phillies have not been overly blessed with an abundance of great arms in their rotation over the years. Currently, Phillies ace Roy Halladay(notes) is considered by many to be the best starting pitcher in baseball. In the 1990s, fellow right-hander Curt Schilling led the Phillies starting staff and was among game's elite hurlers.
Wilson Valdez shifted over from second base and wound up as the winning pitcher early Thursday when the Philadelphia Phillies needed 19 innings to outlast Cincinnati 5-4.
A dwindling crowd at Citizens Bank Park saw Raul Ibanez hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to decide the longest major league game of the season. It ended at 1:19 a.m. after 6 hours, 11 minutes. Not much time for rest, either. The teams were set to play again Thursday at 1:05 p.m.
Heading a staff of numerous lightly talented Phillies teams, Schilling won 101 games over the course of nine seasons. One of his best seasons was 1993, when he went 16-7 in the regular season and threw a masterful 2-0 complete game shutout in Game 5 of the World Series against the Toronto Blue Jays with the team facing elimination. He went 17-11 and had 319 strikeouts in the 1997 season when the Phillies only won 68 games and finished last in the National League East.
